- South Africa’s Presidential Climate Commission has published the Komati One-Year Report, building on its 2023 publication on, Early Lessons and Recommendations from Komati’s Decommissioning and Repurposing Project.
- The report positions Komati as South Africa’s first real-world demonstration of a just energy transition and offers a valuable knowledge base for future coal plant decommissioning efforts.
This report details progress under the decommissioning, repowering, and repurposing of Komati Power Station (KPS) covering the period since the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) published its first evaluation report in November 2023. Informed by desktop research and interviews with key stakeholders working in Komati, this report examines the current state of affairs and planned activities for the next years and reflects on the overarching successes, challenges, and lessons learned both for Komati and other decommissioning sites.
The PCC, in partnership with the Komati Community Steering Committee (Ward 4) and the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) will host Community Feedback Meeting in Komati, with the purpose of engaging directly with residents and local stakeholders on the progress, challenges, and future plans for the Komati Initiative following the publication of Komati One-Year Report.
The meeting aims to foster inclusive dialogue amongst community, local businesses, government, Eskom, and civil society, It serves as a platform to share key findings and reflections from the continuing work and identify solutions for the sustained and inclusive redevelopment for Komati.
