- With the continued success of the Olkaria and Menengai geothermal projects, the Nakuru County in Kenya is looking forward to an unprecedented boom in their economy.
- Many investments in secondary industries are expected on the back of investment in the geothermal sector.
Nakuru County is home to Olkaria in Naivasha and Menengai in the outskirts of Nakuru town – the two largest geothermal power plants in Africa. Once famed for tourism and flamingos, the Nakuru County is slowly being rebranded as a geothermal energy economy.
“We are anticipating a boom in the geothermal industry in the county which will in turn open some of the most exciting investment opportunities for investors. Various investors have shown interest in putting up industries in the county because of affordable power. We want geothermal energy to support the economic fortunes of Nakuru,” said Governor Lee Kinyanjui.
The Olkaria and Menengai geothermal sites continue to be in constant states of growth. In Olkari, state-controlled KenGen is currently putting up new power plants. In Menengai state-owned Geothermal Development Corporation (GDC) has just completed drilling several geothermal wells.
