  • Kenya’s Geothermal Development Company has launched early-stage exploration activities at the Suswa geothermal field in Narok County.
  • The 300 MW project is expected to strengthen Kenya’s renewable energy capacity and provide stable baseload electricity.

Kenya’s state-owned Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has commenced early-stage exploration for the 300 MW Suswa geothermal project in Narok County, marking another milestone in the country’s renewable energy expansion strategy.

Drilling rigs have already been mobilised to the Suswa field near Mount Suswa as GDC advances initial drilling operations following completion of feasibility studies. The project is expected to become a key addition to Kenya’s growing geothermal energy portfolio and support the country’s transition away from fossil fuel-based electricity generation.

Kenya currently produces more than 900 MW of geothermal energy, making it Africa’s largest geothermal producer and one of the world’s top 10 geothermal markets. Installed geothermal capacity is estimated at between 940 MW and 950 MW between 2022 and 2025, with the Olkaria geothermal complex remaining the centrepiece of the country’s renewable energy programme.

The Olkaria geothermal field includes multiple power plants from Olkaria I to Olkaria VI, with Olkaria V commissioned in 2019 while Olkaria VI remains under development. Geothermal power contributes approximately 40% of Kenya’s electricity generation and is valued for its ability to deliver stable round the clock power supply.
