  • On November 19 2024, HyIron received two 6-megawatt electrolysers, which were installed on-site.
  • These key components enable the production of green hydrogen and lay the foundation for climate-friendly iron production.
  • The company now reports that it has commence green hydrogen production and will start producing green iron.
  • At full capacity, the facility will be powered by a 25MW solar plant and 13.4MW of battery storage and operated exclusively during daylight hours.

โ€œThis marks a pivotal moment for HyIron and for Namibiaโ€™s green industrialisation ambitions. We are now in the process of gradually ramping up the electrolyser to its full capacity, which will soon form the foundation for producing iron with zero emissions.

This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the strong support and vision of the Government of Namibia and their ambitious green hydrogen program. We also want to express our deepest gratitude to the more than 60 Namibian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) whose expertise and dedication were instrumental in building this state-of-the-art facility. Your contribution has been invaluable! Furthermore, we extend our sincere thanks to Peric Hydrogen Systems, and to Tony and Ma for their crucial assistance in the successful commissioning of the system. Finally, we reiterate our heartfelt appreciation to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) for the continued support,โ€ the company said in a statement.

Production is set to ramp up to 215kg per hour. An off-taker agreement with German steelmaker Benteler for 200,000 tonnes of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is in place.

Initial phase investment of 30 million euros, 40% funded by German government grants.ย Second phase in mid-2025 to increase solar power capacity tenfold with 230 million euros investment. Third phase planned for 2026, expanding capacity tenfold with 2.3 billion euros investment. HyIron aims for two million tonnes of DRI production annually by 2030.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
