Have your say on Eskom’s 36.15% electricity tariff hike application

  • South Africa’s National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) will conduct public hearings on Eskom’s Sixth Multi-Year Price Determination (MYPD 6) revenue application from 18 November 2024 till 4 December 2024.
  • Eskom’s revenue request amounts to R446 billion for 2025/26, R495 billion for 2026/27 and R537 billion for 2027/28 which translates to tariff hikes of 36.15% for 2025, 11.81% for 2026, and 9.1% for 2027.
  • Eskom has unsustainable debt due to gross mismanagement, incompetence, theft, sabotage, corruption, and fraud.
  • The state-owned energy utility has relied on close to R500 billion in taxpayer bailouts to keep afloat. Read more

NERSA explains that the application is processed according to the MYPD4 Methodology, with primary energy costs, operating expenses, independent power producers (IPPs), international purchases and depreciation as the main drivers.

The public hearings will be held across all nine provinces from 18 November to 4 December 2024, and NERSA’s final decision will be made on 20 December 2024.

Stakeholders wishing to attend or present their views at public hearings must submit their requests to publichearings@nersa.org.za. The deadline for submission of requests is 8 November 2024 at 15:30.
