Geothermal energy to power electric vehicle assembly plant in Kenya

  • The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has achieved a major milestone in its mission to attract sustainable industrial investment with the launch of an Electric Vehicle (EV) assembly plant at the Olkaria Green Energy Park in Nakuru County.

Aquilastor Corporate Investment Company, a Dubai-based firm, today broke ground for the EV plant, which is set to produce 50,000 EV units annually and to create over 13,000 direct and indirect jobs, supporting Kenya’s transition to electric mobility. The project will leverage the park’s direct access to affordable and reliable geothermal power, positioning the Olkaria facility as a destination for green manufacturing in Africa.

Hon Kihagi reaffirmed the Nakuru County’s support, highlighting that the Olkaria Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which hosts the Green Energy Park, offers a competitive environment for investors through tax incentives and access to low-cost green power and reliable infrastructure.

The Olkaria Green Energy Park is specifically designed to capitalize on KenGen’s vast geothermal resources, providing cost-effective and clean power directly from its power plants to manufacturers.

We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
