  • PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) has launched its strategic move beyond electricity by launching the Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Pilot Project.
  • PGE’s wants to build an end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem, from production and distribution to utilization, to support the transition to a low-carbon industry.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk President Director Julfi Hadi emphasized the importance of this project as a milestone in PGE’s business transformation. “This groundbreaking is the first step for PGE to build an integrated green business chain from upstream to downstream. This facility is not only an innovation center but also a model that can be replicated in other geothermal working areas, while also opening up opportunities to accelerate off-grid solutions for transportation and low-carbon industries. Going forward, PGE’s development roadmap also includes the downstreaming of green ammonia and green methanol as future energy solutions,” he explained.

On this occasion, Julfi stated that this technology will be adopted in various other PGE Geothermal Working Areas (WKP) in the future. This PGE initiative is supported by various parties, including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and the Ministry of Investment and Downstream Development/BKPM.

The Ulubelu Green Hydrogen Pilot Project is a clean energy development initiative that utilizes a combination of geothermal energy as a renewable energy source and modern, more energy-efficient electrolysis technology. This facility is designed to produce up to 100 kilograms of green hydrogen per day with a high efficiency rate of 82–88 percent.

In addition to being a production facility, this facility also functions as a center for technological learning, commercial feasibility testing, and market studies to map potential demand in the next phase.

Therefore, the Groundbreaking in Ulubelu is a concrete manifestation of PGE’s commitment to strengthening the foundation of Indonesia’s energy transition towards Net Zero Emissions 2060.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
