- The European Union, represented by their Commmissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, has pledged US$ 27.6 million to accelerate South Africa green hydrogen value chain.
- They also pledged US$ 7.8 million to Transnet, the country’s struggling transport utility for upgrades in railways, ports, pipelines and other logistics.
- The pledge forms part of the EU-Africa: Global Gateway Investment Package
The public announcement followed a meeting between Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa of Energy and Electricity and Minister Parks Tau of the DTIC with Ms Simson.
“These two European Union grants will be implemented in a way so that they contribute to South Africa’s strategic objectives,” Kadri Simson, European commissioner for energy, told reporters in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital.
“This initiative create major opportunities for foreign and local investment across the value chain. As RSA scales up renewable energy, prioritizing local value creation, industrialization, & job creation is crucial for meeting energy demands & supporting economic & JT goals,” commented Parks Tau, Minister of Trade, Industry & Competition.
