- Proposed pipeline would enhance fuel supply security for Eswatini.
- Project could strengthen the Port of Maputo’s position as a regional fuel distribution hub.
- Feasibility studies will determine the project’s technical and economic viability.
The Kingdom of Eswatini is evaluating the construction of a fuel pipeline connecting the country to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique, a move aimed at improving energy security and supply reliability while strengthening regional logistics infrastructure.
According to a statement from Mozambique’s state-owned Ports and Railways company, Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), the proposed pipeline would create a dedicated fuel transport corridor between the Port of Maputo and Eswatini.
Eswatini currently relies on the Port of Maputo as a key gateway for fuel imports. A direct pipeline connection would improve the efficiency and predictability of fuel deliveries while reducing dependence on more expensive transport methods.
The initiative comes at a time when countries across the region are seeking secure and cost-effective energy supply routes amid ongoing volatility in global energy markets.
CFM said the project remains at an early stage and will be subject to detailed technical and economic feasibility assessments before any investment decision is made.
If implemented, the pipeline would further enhance the strategic role of the Port of Maputo as a regional fuel distribution hub and support deeper cooperation between Mozambique and Eswatini in the areas of energy, transport and regional economic integration.
