Eskom and Agence Franรงaise de Dรฉveloppement (AFD) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a framework to strengthen the current cooperation and collaboration between the two parties, and to promote the development of a competitive electricity sector, supported by modern technology and low carbon emission.

Eskom, South Africa’s public electricity company, produces around 95% of the country’s electricity, and is in charge of distribution to large customers, in rural areas and in urban areas.

In the last fourteen years, AFD has committed ZARย 5.9 billion (EURย 340 million) in loans in support of Eskom projects.

In response to global shifts towards liberalised electricity markets and more carbon efficient energy sources, Eskom has embarked on a restructuring programme to ensure its sustainability and resilience while pursuing a trajectory towards a sustainable, low-carbon future through the Just Energy Transition (JET) strategy.

The MOU has the following objectives:

  1. a) Support for the implementation of the Namaqualand Strengthening Phase 2 project
  2. b) Support for the implementation of interventions to restructure Eskomโ€™s business model, through a technical cooperation grant
  3. c) Identify potential collaborations for the energy transition to renewable energy, to mitigate social and environmental impacts, through innovative propositions such as the Just Energy Transition strategy
  4. d) Support the development of a Just Energy Transition strategy to advance Eskomโ€™s aspiration for a lower carbon, socially inclusive future
  5. e) Facilitate dialogue between Eskom and strategic stakeholders around the Komati Power Station to consolidate visions on a just energy transition.

โ€œWe have had long lasting ties with our partner Eskom. We are confident that ourย closeย collaborationย withย Eskom will serveย to enhance Eskomโ€™sย capacity toย find sustainable solutions to the challenges it facesโ€, His Excellency Aurรฉlien Lechevallier, Ambassador of France to South Africa, said.

โ€œThe Komati Power Station is amongst those in Eskomโ€™s fleet of older power stations that we hope to use to light up a much brighter and more sustainable future under the Just Energy Transition strategy. In this brighter and more sustainable future of electricity generation, Eskom is encouraged by the continued support and partnership of the French people as represented by His Excellency, Ambassador Aurรฉlien Lechevallier, and AFD. French institutions have always stood beside Eskom at key events in the development of the electricity industry in South Africa,โ€ said Andrรฉ de Ruyter, the Eskom Group Chief Executive.

โ€œEskom is a very important long-term partner to AFD, and hence we affirm our commitment to support the public utilityโ€™s transformation effortsโ€, Bruno Deprince, AFDโ€™s Regional Director, said.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
