News flash
- Energy aggregator, Envusa Energy, has confirmed that the Buntu Switching Station has been provisionally handed over to Eskom as of 23 July 2025.
- The switching station is part of the 520MW Koruson 2 wind power cluster.
A switching station is a substation specifically designed for connecting and disconnecting electrical circuits, but without transformers to change voltage levels. It acts as a central point for managing the flow of electricity by switching between different lines or components.
The Koruson cluster, with a total electricity generation capacity of 520 MW, is being developed under the Envusa Energy joint venture formed between Anglo American and EDF power solutions. The project comprises the Umsobomvu Wind Project (140MW), Hartebeesthoek Wind Project (140MW), Mooi Plaats PV Project (240MW), located in the “Koruson” cluster in the Hydra supply area outside Middelburg on the border of the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces.
All of the projects will connect to the new Koruson 400kV Main Transmission Substation (MTS), built as part of EDF power solutions’ Koruson 1 project cluster. Envusa Energy will act as an intermediate entity, aggregating power from the projects and selling to the ultimate off-taker mines.
