- Discovery Green has signed a power purchase agreement with Red Rocket, covering phase 2 with 158MW capacity of the Overberg wind farm.
- The multi-offtaker wheeling contract will deliver 489 GWh to its clients, which include Implats, Fortress Real Estate, Balwin Properties, KP Lime, and The Capital Hotels.
The Overberg Wind Farm is located near Swellendam in the Western Cape. Originally developed in two phases, it is now a 400MW nameplate capacity facility with a single point of connection. Phase 1 of the project, developed in collaboration with Richards Bay Minerals, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group, boasts a nameplate capacity of 242MW, and Phase 2, developed with Discovery Green, boasts a nameplate capacity of 158MW. Overberg Wind Farm will feature 54 Goldwind GWH182/6.2MW and 9 Goldwind GWH182/7.2MW wind turbines. It is the largest single commercial wind project in South Africa, and is expected to commence commercial operations in 2027.
“This project marks a turning point in the renewable energy landscape in South Africa. Implementing a project of such scale and complexity reflects our commitment to building large-scale, financially viable infrastructure which assists businesses in transitioning toward cleaner energy with simplicity and security. It’s a benchmark model that shows how the private sector can accelerate energy reform while creating long-term value,” stated Dan Ginsberg, head of research and development at Discovery Green.
