  • The Africa Energy Indaba 2025, scheduled for 4–6 March 2025 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, is proud to announce the inclusion of a dedicated Nuclear Forum in its programme.
  • This landmark event will bring together global experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss how nuclear energy can transform Africa’s energy landscape.

Nuclear energy has emerged as a pivotal solution to Africa’s dual challenges of ensuring energy access and sustainability. As the continent seeks to meet growing energy demands while reducing carbon emissions, the Nuclear Forum will explore the latest advancements in nuclear technologies tailored for African contexts. Topics will include innovative solutions such as small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced safety protocols, and the role of nuclear energy in creating a resilient and balanced energy mix alongside renewable sources.

Nuclear energy holds immense potential for Africa as it offers a reliable, scalable, and sustainable solution to the continent’s growing energy demands. With over 600 million Africans lacking access to electricity, nuclear power can provide the baseload energy required to support industrialisation, economic growth, and improved quality of life. Its low-carbon footprint makes it a critical component of Africa’s strategy to mitigate climate change while meeting energy needs. Emerging technologies like small modular reactors (SMRs) are particularly suited to Africa, offering flexibility, enhanced safety, and cost-efficiency. By embracing nuclear energy, African nations can diversify their energy portfolios, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and build resilient energy systems capable of powering a sustainable future.

South Africa’s Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the only operational nuclear power plant on the African continent, exemplifies the critical role nuclear energy already plays. For over 30 years, Koeberg has been a cornerstone of South Africa’s energy security, providing reliable and low-carbon electricity while contributing to skills development and technological innovation. Its success underscores the potential for similar projects across Africa to drive economic growth and energy independence.

The Nuclear Forum will highlight how projects like Koeberg can serve as models for future developments across the continent. Keynote addresses, panel discussions, and case studies will delve into regulatory frameworks, financing strategies, and capacity-building initiatives to enable African nations to adopt nuclear technologies effectively.

Industry professionals, policymakers, and energy enthusiasts are invited to attend this groundbreaking forum.
