The Zambian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure, diversified and climate resilient energy sector with the launch of the Chisamba 100 megawatt Phase II Solar Project, describing it as a strategic national investment.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Chisamba District, Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote said the project places renewable energy at the centre of Zambia’s development agenda and reflects Government’s determination to reduce exposure to climate related risks.

Mr Chikote noted that Zambia’s historical dependence on hydropower has made the country vulnerable to changing weather patterns, underscoring the need for a broader and more balanced energy mix. He said Government is accelerating the development of coal for baseload power alongside solar, wind and other renewable sources to ensure sustainable and reliable electricity supply.

The Minister said the 100 megawatt Chisamba Phase II Solar Project will make a meaningful contribution to national generation capacity, enhance grid stability and meet rising demand from households, commercial users and industry. He added that the project also strengthens Central Province’s position within Zambia’s evolving energy landscape.

Beyond power generation, Mr Chikote emphasised that large scale energy projects play a critical role in stimulating local economies through job creation, skills transfer and infrastructure development. He said these outcomes are aligned with Zambia’s national development objectives and inclusive growth ambitions.

He commended ZESCO Limited, development partners, financiers, contractors, traditional leaders and local communities for their collaboration in advancing the project. The Minister further reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ongoing sector reforms aimed at encouraging private sector participation, improving energy security and delivering reliable, affordable and sustainable power across the country.
