Brian Dames Steps Down From Presidents Energy Task Team

In a media statement released this morning, South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa announced that has agreed to let Brian Dames, the head of African Rainbow Energy and Power, step down form the newly appointed Eskom Sustainability Task Team.

The Presidency said that Dames had noted concerns rais ed regarding a “perceived conflict of interest relating to the scope of work and terms of reference of the Eskom Sustainability Task Team”.

“Based on these concerns, Mr Dames has requested to be released from the task team. President Ramaphosa has expressed his appreciation for Mr Dames’s willingness to serve and respects the judgment he has exercised.” The statement reads.

Dames is a former Eskom CEO and currently runs Patrice Motsepe energy division, African Rainbow Energy and Power (AREP). Ramaphosa is married to Motsepe’s sister Tshepo Motsepe. African Rainbow Energy and Power has investments in various energy sectors including renewable energy where they are committed energy supplier to Eskom through third party Power Purchase Agreements.
