  • The multiyear trading licence enables BluEnergy to buy and sell electricity across the value chain.
  • The integrated model links municipalities, independent power producers and energy users.
  • The move strengthens private sector participation in South Africa’s energy reform agenda.

JSE listed Blu Label Unlimited has announced that its subsidiary, BluEnergy Trading, has been granted a multi-year energy trading licence by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.

The approval marks a significant regulatory milestone for the Group and positions BluEnergy to actively participate in electricity trading by connecting municipalities, independent power producers and large energy users. The licence enables the business to facilitate more resilient and cost effective renewable energy supply arrangements for local communities – effectively competing with Eskom.

BluEnergy’s execution capability is supported by its partnership with Cigicell, a leading provider of prepaid electricity vending and revenue assurance systems embedded in more than 95 municipalities across nine provinces. The integration of prepaid revenue collection and settlement infrastructure is expected to enhance municipal revenue security while supporting long term power purchase agreements.

BluEnergy operates through three specialised entities spanning project development, asset ownership, operations and maintenance, and energy procurement and trading. The integrated structure allows the company to manage technical and commercial elements of energy delivery, including grid integration, wheeling frameworks and contractual performance. The model is designed to support localised generation and efficient energy flows through end to end solutions tailored to municipal and commercial customers.

The licence award comes as South Africa advances reforms aimed at increasing private sector participation, strengthening energy security and accelerating the transition to renewable generation.

With regulatory approval secured, BluEnergy is expected to accelerate the build out of its project pipeline and operationalise trading activities in support of a more resilient, decentralised and sustainable power system.
