  • ACWA Power, EnBW, Rostock Port, and VNG sign MoU to develop green ammonia corridor supporting Germany’s renewable energy transition.
  • Ammonia produced at ACWA’s 4GW Yanbu facility will be converted into green hydrogen at Rostock for injection into the national network.
  • Project targets commercial operations by 2030 with FEED studies on schedule for completion by mid-2026.

ACWA Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, Rostock Port GmbH, and VNG AG to establish a green ammonia corridor from its Yanbu project in Saudi Arabia to the Port of Rostock in Germany.

The initiative aims to convert imported green ammonia into green hydrogen for injection into Germany’s national grid, supporting the country’s renewable energy transition and helping decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors.

Under the agreement, ACWA Power will produce green ammonia at its 4GW Yanbu facility, EnBW will act as off-taker and oversee commercial and logistical operations, Rostock Port will manage port operations, and VNG will develop a dedicated ammonia cracker to convert the ammonia into green hydrogen for the German market.

ACWA Power is leading the development of the Yanbu production site with support from EnBW. Front-End Engineering Design for the process plants is expected to be completed by mid-2026, with commercial operations targeted for 2030. The company is also exploring co-development and co-investment opportunities in ammonia infrastructure in Germany.

Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power, described the partnership as a pivotal step for global decarbonisation. “This MoU leverages our Yanbu hub to deliver scale for Europe’s hydrogen needs, with processing at Rostock for core network injection. These assets accelerate global decarbonisation, bolster energy security, and affirm our role as Saudi Arabia’s green molecules champion,” he said.

Dr. Georg Stamatelopoulos, Chief Executive Officer of EnBW, emphasised the value of international collaboration. “By working together with ACWA, Rostock Port, and VNG, we are taking a step toward building a reliable green ammonia corridor from Saudi Arabia to Germany. Each partner brings complementary strengths, allowing us to address challenges more effectively than we could individually,” he said.

The green ammonia corridor aligns with Saudi Arabia’s strategy to lead in green hydrogen and ammonia production, while supporting Germany’s goal to import 50 to 70 percent of its green hydrogen needs.
