  • UNIDO, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation and Guidehouse Germany, and with support from the DTIC and DFFE, is developing a €25 million project to support the decarbonisation of South Africa’s steel sector.
  • This initiative, which will be submitted to the Mitigation Action Facility for funding, aims to enhance competitiveness, meet climate obligations, and unlock export opportunities through greener steel production.

Stakeholders are invite to a strategic workshop on 16 October 2025 (12:30–15:30) at the IDC in Sandton, to help shape this transformative project. Your insights are vital to ensure the initiative reflects the realities and opportunities across the steel value chain—from mining and energy to scrap, logistics, and technology.

  • Exploring what can practically be achieved in the short- and medium-term across the value chain, highlighting where stakeholders can contribute to near-zero steel pathways and where expectations need to be tempered.
  • Taking stock of the current status of enabling infrastructure, power availability, grid access, transport, scrap collection systems, and technical standards and analyse their adequacy to support transformation
Gathering stakeholder input on what measures, partnerships, and enabling conditions the SA Steel Decarbonisation Project should consider when designing interventions and rolling out implementation.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
