Angola Starts Construction of Mega 370MW Solar Project Programme

  • Local Angolan newspaper, Jornal de Angola, has reported that Angolan Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, attended the sod turning ceremony for the construction of two large solar PV plants (189MW and 97MW) in the western province of Benguela.
  • The two plants form part of a mega solar programme, which when finished, will consist of seven plants with a total capacity of 370MW.
  • The cities of Bie, Huambo, Moxico, Lunda Sur and Lunda Norte will also host solar plants.

The Euro 500 million projects is developed by US company Sun Africa and the Portuguese EPC, MCA. According to official estimates, more than 1.2 million families could benefit from the solar project, whose construction will be completed in about five years.

“The use of renewable energy sources is considerably relevant in environmental terms and will help to reduce production costs and oil consumption for the supply of electricity,” Angola’s minister said.
