  • Nyika has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for Malawi’s first utility-scale hydroelectric power plant in the northern region.
  • The 51-MW run-of-river project, located in the Rumphi District, will be developed by Nyika Energy and is designed to minimize environmental impact.
  • The agreement with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) marks a significant step towards diversifying Malawi’s energy sources and expanding clean energy capacity.
  • Financial close is expected in 2027, with commercial operations anticipated by 2029.

The project will consist of three hydropower schemes: Phoka (13MW), Munonono (18MW), and Chiweta (20MW). The project is expected to generate 276 GWh of electricity annually, contributing significantly to Malawi’s energy diversification and reducing reliance on the Shire River.ย By tapping into the north’s hydropower potential, the project will also improve Malawi’s energy security and climate resilience.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
