  • Eastern Province is set to receive around 32 MW of solar generation capacity under projects valued at more than US$23 million.

The Zambian government has completed the procurement process for the development of solar power plants in all 156 constituencies under the Presidential Constituency Energy Initiative, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to strengthen energy security through decentralised renewable energy generation.

According to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, contractors have now been secured to deliver 156 solar facilities, each with a capacity of 2 MW, resulting in a combined generation capacity of 312 MW nationwide. The programme represents an estimated investment of US$232 million.

Speaking during a site visit and preparatory engagements ahead of a groundbreaking ceremony in Eastern Province, Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Nicholas Phiri said the initiative stems from President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure as part of broader efforts to address power supply challenges and improve energy access across the country.

Phiri said Eastern Province is expected to receive approximately 32 MW of solar generation capacity under the programme, with projects valued at more than US$23 million.

He added that the procurement process was conducted in line with the government’s priorities of quality, timely project delivery and value for money.
