XIAN Energy acquires 54MW Bangweulu solar PV power plant in Zambia

  • AXIAN Energy has acquired the Bangweulu Solar PV power plant in Zambia.

Located in Kafue District, Lusaka Province, the facility covers an area of 52 hectares and has an installed capacity of 54.3 MWp. It will generate an average of 87 GWh per year, providing clean energy to 82 500 households.

The plant was financed by IFC (International Finance Corporation) and DFC (U.S. International Development Finance Corporation), and stands among the successful projects developed under the World Bank’s Scaling Solar program, an initiative designed to accelerate the rollout of competitive and reliable solar projects in emerging markets.

This acquisition marks AXIAN Energy’s second utility-scale solar power plant connected to the grid in East Africa, reinforcing its contribution to Zambia’s energy transition and socio-economic development.

Following the completion of this transaction on thursday october 16, 2025, AXIAN Energy becomes the majority shareholder of Bangweulu Solar PV with 85.6% of the capital, alongside the Industrial Development Corporation Zambia Ltd (IDC), which retains 14.4%.
