Red Rocket wins 590MW in South Africa’s REIPPPP BW7 reallocation to solar PV

  • Six solar PV projects, with a combined capacity of 1 290 MW, have been named as preferred bidders following the seventh bid window (BW7) of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
  • The award follows a re-allocation of MW under the seventh bid window from onshore wind to solar PV.
  • Once operational, the projects will provide clean and reliable energy under 20-year PPAs.

Scatec ASA has been awarded 700MW of the 1290MW comprising of the Kroonstad PV cluster in the Free State while Red Rocket has been awarded the remaining 590MW also in the Free State. The bid prices ranged from R499.99/MWh and R514.06. A further eight compliant preferred bidders have been identified subject to value for money negotiations.  Further announcements will be made in this regard once these processes have been concluded.

Scatec yesterday announced that they had one Oslaagte Solar 2 (293 MW), Oslaagte Solar 3 (293 MW), and Leeuwspruit Solar (260 MW). Read more 

The bidders list for REIPPPP Bid Window 7 was release in August 2024. BW 7 seeks to procure 3200 MW of wind and 1800 MW of solar power. The outcome revealed an under subscription for wind technology at 1692MW while solar PV is oversubscribed with a total of 8526MW capacity. A total of 8 solar projects and no wind projects were awarded preferred bidders status originally in REIPPPP Bid Window 7. Read more
