News flash

  • Russian president Vladimir Putin is considering limiting exports of uranium in retaliation for Western sanctions.
  • Russia is the world’s largest exporter of nuclear fuel and technology.
  • The country’s state owned nuclear energy utility, Rosatom Corp, controls almost half of the global enrichment capacity needed to convert the ore into energy.

In a televised address to his ministers, Putin said such restrictions could also be introduced for other commodities. “Please look at some of the types of goods that we supply to the world market … Maybe we should think about certain restrictions – uranium, titanium, nickel,” he said.

Russian produced uranium is used to power nuclear reactors all around the world including the US, China, South Korea, France, Kazakhstan, and Germany.

Russia accounted for 27% of the enriched uranium supplied to US commercial nuclear reactors last year.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
