The Nkangala District Municipality officially launched its Just Transition Programme on 22 May 2026 at its offices in Middelburg, marking a significant step in strengthening the district’s response to South Africa’s evolving energy transition.
The programme is designed to build municipal capability, improve investment readiness, support economic diversification, and position the district to respond proactively to both the opportunities and challenges associated with the transition to a lower carbon economy.
The launch event also served as a strategic engagement platform aimed at improving alignment between government, municipalities, business, development partners, state owned entities and civil society. Stakeholders said collaboration will be critical to ensuring the Just Transition is implemented in a coordinated, inclusive and practical manner.
The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency attended the launch and presented several green economy projects and investment opportunities within the district.
The agency said its participation reflected the growing collaboration with the Nkangala District Municipality and a shared commitment to advancing a transition that supports economic resilience, job creation and sustainable development across the district and the broader province.
A key component of the programme is the establishment of a District Just Transition Project Management Office, which will be linked to national and district transition structures. The office will support coordination, implementation oversight, stakeholder alignment and project facilitation.
The programme will also support municipalities with local economic development and transition planning by identifying practical economic opportunities aligned with the energy transition.
Another major focus area is the development of viable and investment ready projects. The initiative will assist in identifying and preparing catalytic projects aimed at attracting investment and unlocking sustainable economic growth across the district.
Stakeholders said the launch of the programme represents an important milestone in advancing a coordinated, locally driven and investment focused transition that delivers practical benefits for communities, municipalities and the provincial economy.
