  • The Federal Government of Nigeria has submitted a budget allocation application of US$66.65M for the installation of solar mini-grids in selected federal universities, teaching hospitals, and government institutions.

The initiative, under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Power, aims to provide reliable, cost-effective, and climate-friendly electricity while reducing dependence on diesel generators and lowering operational costs for public institutions.

According to Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the agency will begin implementation once the budget is approved and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

The solar mini-grids will be deployed across key institutions, including:

  • Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
  • University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
  • University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  • University of Ibadan (UI)
  • University College Hospital (UCH)

We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
