- The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved new maximum gas prices for SLG (Pty) Ltd, Natural Gas Vehicles (Pty) Ltd, and Virtual Gas Network (Pty) Ltd.
- The decision was taken by the Energy Regulator at its meeting held on 29 October 2025.
SLG (Pty) Ltd
NERSA approved SLG’s maximum gas price at R155.34/GJ for traders or resellers and R166.92/GJ for end-user customers, effective from 31 July 2025. The price will be adjusted monthly—with a one-month lag—until 30 June 2026, in line with SLG’s supplier contracts.
Natural Gas Vehicles (Pty) Ltd
For Natural Gas Vehicles (Pty) Ltd, NERSA approved a maximum gas price of R388.77/GJ for the period 1 May 2025 to 28 February 2026. The approved price will remain fixed for the 10-month period and will not be subject to adjustment.
Virtual Gas Network (Pty) Ltd
Virtual Gas Network (Pty) Ltd received approval for a maximum gas price of R293.30/GJ for the same period—1 May 2025 to 28 February 2026—also fixed for 10 months without adjustment.
Across all three approvals, NERSA confirmed that:
- The approved maximum gas prices are exclusive of VAT.
- Licensees may offer discounts, provided they comply with the non-discrimination provisions of Section 22 of the Gas Act, 2001 (Act No. 48 of 2001).
- The effective date of NERSA’s decision marks the start of the price’s monitoring period, remaining in force until a new maximum price is approved.
- Each licensee must apply for its next maximum gas price four months before the expiry of the current approval.
Commenting on the decision, Ms Nomfundo Maseti, Full-Time Regulator Member responsible for Piped-Gas Regulation, said the move is aimed at addressing limited competition in South Africa’s piped-gas market.
“These decisions are designed to counteract the lack of sufficient competition within the relevant piped-gas markets by setting maximum prices that emulate those that would exist in competitive markets. This approach helps create conditions for effective competition, in line with the provisions of the Gas Act,” Maseti said.
