The Quipungo Solar project becomes the first contracted project under Angola’s planned 500 MW Project Royal Sable. The agreement supports grid strengthening, job creation and long term clean power supply in southern Angola.

Masdar, the UAE based clean energy company, has signed its first power purchase agreement in Angola for the 150 megawatt Quipungo Solar Photovoltaic project, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion across Africa’s energy markets.

The Quipungo project is the first site to be contracted under Project Royal Sable, a planned 500 megawatt renewable energy programme spanning three locations. Once fully developed, the programme is expected to strengthen Angola’s southern power grid and support national sustainable development and energy access goals.

The long term offtake agreement was signed with Angola’s state owned electricity transmission company, Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade. The signing took place during the IRENA General Assembly held as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and was witnessed by senior government and international energy leaders from Angola, the United Arab Emirates and the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Located in Huila Province, the Quipungo Solar PV plant will supply clean electricity to the national grid while acting as the commercial anchor for the broader Royal Sable portfolio. The full 500 megawatt programme is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs, provide clean power to approximately 300,000 homes and significantly improve generation capacity in southern Angola.

According to IRENA Director General Francesco LaCamera, the agreement demonstrates how international cooperation and structured financing platforms can turn national energy plans into bankable projects that strengthen power systems and expand access to reliable electricity across Africa.
