- Appointment supports Eskom’s strategy to compete in South Africa’s liberalised electricity market.
- Utility says one year without loadshedding marks a major structural shift for the power sector.
Eskom has appointed Junaid Munshi as Group Executive for its Distribution division, effective from 1 June 2026, as the utility accelerates efforts to strengthen customer centricity and expand new products and services in South Africa’s evolving electricity market.
Munshi brings more than 30 years of engineering, commercial and marketing leadership experience across the technology and telecommunications sectors in South Africa and several African markets.
He most recently served as Chief Commercial Officer at Cable & Wireless Seychelles, where he led the company’s commercial strategy, revenue growth initiatives and market development activities. His portfolio included oversight of marketing, sales, customer service and field operations.
Before joining Cable & Wireless Seychelles, Munshi held senior executive positions at Maziv Group, Cell C and Vodacom Group. Eskom said his leadership style is strongly focused on customer centricity, innovation, digital services and the development of high performing teams.
Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane said the appointment comes at a pivotal time for the utility and the wider energy sector.
“The decisive turning point of one year without loadshedding that we reached earlier this month marks a structural shift from a recovering grid to a stable, high performing power system that advances the economy, competition and the integration of renewable energy,” said Marokane.
“In the reformed and liberalised marketplace we recognise we are no longer a monopoly and need to compete to retain and expand our customer base and we are making the necessary investments to empower our distribution division teams to do so.”
Marokane added that Eskom continues to strengthen its capabilities through a combination of internal development and external recruitment.
“As we have indicated before, we adopt the approach of augmenting internal capabilities with external capabilities where required to bring about speed to deliver on our strategy. We have again seen a noticeable increase in the volume and calibre of applicants who want to work for Eskom, demonstrating that this is a company people want to bring their skills to and build their careers.”
Munshi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Cape Town, a Graduate Diploma in Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MBA from Wits Business School.
The position became vacant after former Eskom Distribution Group Executive Monde Bala was seconded to the Interim Chief Executive Officer role at the National Transmission Company South Africa. He was later permanently appointed as CEO of the transmission entity.
Eskom also thanked Agnes Mlambo, who served in the role in an acting capacity while the utility conducted an executive search process.
