- The Zambian Ministry of Energy with partners Accura Logistics and international investor Baker Global Capital Africa Zambia, has launched a $40 million solar energy project to install 50MW megawatts of solar power across 209 public institutions, including schools and hospitals, in the Eastern Province.
The initiative forms part of President Hakainde Hichilema’s broader strategy to improve access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy, particularly in underserved communities.
At the launch, Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, explained that the solar installations will benefit crucial public institutions, including schools and hospitals, thus improving service delivery and the quality of life for communities in the Eastern Province.
Frequent blackouts and dependence on hydropower have made Zambia vulnerable to climate fluctuations. To address this, the government is expanding its renewable energy portfolio to diversify its power supply, reduce regional inequalities in electricity access, and attract foreign investment in clean energy.
By focusing on essential public infrastructure, the project aims to enhance energy security and service continuity in critical sectors.
