Green Building Africa, through its division, Green Your Hotel, has recently installed a Solar Power (Photovoltaic) System for the New Maroela Hotel in Pretoria North. The hotel sets itself apart from its competitors by offering gaming facilities which include slot machines and sports betting. The New Maroela Hotel is situated in Pretoria North. The area is notoriously exposed to load shedding and power cuts which were compromising the gaming and general hospitality offering at the hotel.
After a thorough site visit and study of the existing energy demand, a 15KW solar array plus battery back system was proposed. The roof top solar array is connected to a SMA inverter while the MLT Powerstar 11 24KVA 48V Pure Sinewave inverter with integrated battery charger was specified for the battery backup system. 24 Trojan T105 – RE 225Ahr @ C20 6V Wet Cell Batteries take care of the energy stored. The system ensures that dedicated areas of the hotel are not affected by power cuts. In particular, patrons are assured of trouble free gaming.
The New Maroela Hotel made use of the tax incentives for such an installation from SARS, by exercising the Section 12B tax incentive for which allows a 50:30:20 write-offs on the cost price of the equipment used to generate electricity and the owner of the equipment gets the deduction. The equipment must be used for business purposes to claim the deduction.
The owner, Mr Karabis, who had previously installed sola solar geysers at his hotel, says “solar power was the next step in becoming more environmentally friendly. At the same time we improve the visiting experience of our guest plus the profitability of our business.”
