The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF) has won the 2018 South African National Energy Association (SANEA) Energy Education Award at the banquet and awards ceremony held at the Military Museum in Johannesburg over the weekend.

Through these awards, SANEA and the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) aim to celebrate and pay tribute to enthusiastic South Africans and organisations that are key roleplayers in the energy landscape.

“This is a great achievement for the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and this award serves as motivation to continue encouraging more students to participate in the Expo which remains an ideal catalyst for unearthing the country’s brightest young minds, opening their eyes to the various options and many exciting career opportunities available in the extensive scientific world,” says Thava Govender, Eskom Group Executive for Generation and Acting Group Executive for Sustainability & Risk.

Govender adds that greater exposure to science, technology, engineering, mathematics and an innovation (STEMI) activity from a young age is a critical driver for economic transformation and in the creation of a better world for all.

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is a science fair, where students have a chance to showcase projects based on their own scientific investigations. The students are encouraged to conduct research in a field which they are passionate about, and to then enter that project in different fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI).

This year saw thousands of young scientists competing at the Eskom Expo regional finals in the different provinces by presenting their projects before a panel of judges and industry experts. They competed for a much sought-after chance to represent their regions and provinces at the ISF which will be held from 2 – 5 October in Johannesburg, where great prizes will be awarded.

We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
