Tanzania Allocates 600MW to Gas or Coal + 350MW to Solar and Wind Projects

  • TANESCO intends to procure power generation from gas or coal with total capacity of 600MW between 2018 and 2020.
  • The announcement stipulates power projects of a capacity not less than 150MW and not more than 300MW in one location.
  • The utility also announce tenders to procure 200MW of wind power projects plus 150Mw of solar power projects.

Tanzania Electric Supply Company Ltd (TANESCO) intends to procure power generation from a set of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) or superior technology coal-based power projects with total capacity of 600MW between 2018 and 2020.

In the recent tender notice, TANESCO presents this opportunity to prospective developers to undertake feasibility study, finance, build, own, operate and transfer coal power projects of a capacity not less than 150MW and not more than 300MW in one location. The tender was announced on 7th November 2018.

On the same day TANESCO also announced an invitation for the tender for wind and solar projects:

  • TANESCO intends to procure power generation from a set of wind power projects with total capacity of up to 200 MW from Singida, Njombe and Dodoma Regions. Projects should be completed between 2018 and 2020.
  • TANESCO intends to procure power generation from a set of solar photovoltaic (PV) based power projects with total capacity of up to 150 MWp in Dodoma, Singida, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Simiyu and Iringa Regions between years 2018 and 2020.

Tanzania is also trying to secure funds to develop the 2100 MW Hydroelectric plant at Stiegler’s Gorge in the UNESCO-designated Selous Game Reserve .
