- The South Sudan Electricity Corporation (SSEC) utility has launched a call for consultants to help define the nation’s renewable energy development program.
The Government of the Republic of South Sudan (GOSS) has requested a US$ 990,000 grant from the
Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) to prepare the proposed Renewable Energy Development
Program.
SEFA is hosted by the African Development Bank and will finance the Technical Assistance (TA)
for the proposed project to facilitate private sector participation in renewable energy generation for the Juba
City network. The TA will finance a project manager and a firm for the preparation of technical, financial
social & environmental and institutional arrangements for the program
“Eligibility criteria, establishment of the short-list and the selection procedure shall be in accordance with the African Development Bank’s procurement policy framework for bank group funded operations (October 2015),” stated the SSEC in the consultancy tender document. The deadline for submissions is 24th September, 2019 .

Only 1% of the South Sudanese population has access to electricity. The country relies on diesel-fired generators, which suffer the demerits of high cost of fuel, short life span and environmental degradation. 83% of the population live in rural areas who use kerosene, charcoal and firewood3 for daily energy needs. The installed power capacity in South Sudan is around 131 MW.
