- The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has announced the appointed of Mr Smunda Mokoena as its new chairperson.
- Mr Mokoena was originally appointed as Part-Time Regulator Member (PTRM) of NERSA for a period of four years, effective from 14 September 2020 to 13 September 2024.
Mr Mokoena is currently working as an Executive Director at Best Infrastructure and Investments (Bii), and Service Delivery Solutions (SDS). He holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from De Montfort University (UK), Bachelor of Science (Engineering) from the then University of Natal and a Government Certificate of Competency as Electrical Engineer for the Mines and Works from the then Department of Minerals and Energy (DME).
Mr Mokoena has over 34 years of work experience in mining, energy, infrastructure development, policy making and economic regulation. He worked as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Electricity Regulator (NER), and CEO and Full-Time Regulator Member (FTRM) of NERSA. Prior to this, he worked as Deputy Director-General at NEPAD (The Presidency), Deputy Director-General (Energy), Chief Director for Energy Supply, and Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines at the DME. Before joining the DME, he worked as a Senior Engineer at Elandsrand Gold Mining Company, Western Deep Levels, ERGO and Anglo-American Head Office.
Mr Mokoena held several Non-Executive Directorships or Memberships of various Boards including being the Chairpersons of the National Public Transport Regulator (NPTR), South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), SADC Regional Electricity Regulatory Association (RERA), African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR) and Süd Chemie Zeolites. NERSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Advocate Nomalanga Sithole congratulated Mr Mokoena on his new appointment. Advocate Sithole further said that Mr Mokena’s leadership as NERSA Chairperson will ensure that NERSA continues to effectively and efficiently execute its mandate, and contributes towards the sustainable development of South Africa.
