Belgium’s QWAY Energy and Angolan company, Thueia LDA have partnered to develop 500 MW of renewable energy capacity in Angola. The projects under development will be a mix of utility-scale solar, wind and waste to energy technologies. The Angola Strategy 2025 sets out a bold energy expansion strategy heavily weighted on renewable energy to bump up its populations’ access to electricity to 60%.
According to a report in Pv Magazine, QWAY energy’s managing director Luc Graré expects 250-300 MW of the capacity to be solar PV, and that once the development phase is complete he expects construction to begin by the end of 2020.
Thueia LDA is active in the waste management and fishing industries in Angola. The company is headed by former BP Upstream Business Interface Manager Osvaldo Neto. The new venture aims to reduce Thueia’s own production costs whilst also contributing to the electrification of Angola.
According to a World Bank report compiled in 2016, 40.52 % of Angola’s population has access to electricity. 70.73 % have access in urban areas while only 15.98% have access in the rural areas. The Angolan Ministry of Energy has identified potential sites for 55 GW of PV in the country, as well as 3 GW of wind and 18 GW of hydro.
Angola recently joined the World Bank’s Scaling Solar program aimed at unlocking private investments for PV in African nations and is working with the African Development Bank on the creation of an implementation support unit, to further stimulate investments from independent companies in Angola’s electricity sector.
The Angola Strategy 2025 also sets out a long-term vision for the country’s transmission infrastructure sector. The Strategy identifies interconnection of the north, central and south systems and the creation of a new system in the east, interconnecting the capitals of Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul and Moxico.
