New Substation for 140MW Kangnas Wind Farm Nears Completion

  • The construction of the new substation dedicated for the 140MW Kangnas Wind Farm near completion.
  • The Groeipunt transmission substation is now 80% complete.
  • The substation will be handed over to the State-owned power utility, Eskom, in March next year.

The construction works of the substation begun in June this year and marked the first time that an independent power producer in South Africa had taken on the responsibility of a greenfield self-build transmission substation. Normally this kind of project is undertaken by Eskom.

The delivery of the 160 MVA transformer will be done by the end of January next year, followed by the 250 MVA transformer handover the following month.

“As soon as the two transformers are installed and all Pad Mount transformers are put in place, commissioning and testing will start on completed circuits, while the final erection of turbines will continue in remaining circuits, followed by Grid Code compliance testing,” Manie Kotze, Kangnas construction project manager said in a statement. He also added that the substation was expected to reach commercial operation in late August 2020.

Construction on the 140Mw Kangnas Wind Farm began in September last year. The farm will consist of sixty-one, 2.3Mw wind turbines, each 115m-high. Read more

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
