- Speaking in parliament last Thursday on the Government’s Five Year Programme (PQG) for 2020-2024, Mozambique’s Prime Minister, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, laid out the number of projects that will come online in the next five years.
- The aim is to supply power to all of the country’s administrative posts after the process of electrification of all district headquarters was concluded.
To achieve this, as part of the Energy for All Programme, the natural gas thermoelectric plant in Temane is due to be built plus the construction of solar plants in Metoro and Pemba in Cabo Delgado will be complete. The solar plant in Cuamba will also be completed in the Niassa province. The country will also construct two mini-hydro plants in Berua, in Zambézia and Luaisse, in Niassa province.
In addition, the second phase of the natural gas project in Pande and the light oil project in Inhassoro, in Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, will be commissioned within the 2020-2024 period the Prime Minister announced. The transmission network will be bolstered by the completion of construction of a the high-voltage Cuamba-Marrupa power transmission line.
With these projects, the Prime Minister believes that Mozambique will increase the number of consumers of power from the national grid by 3.8 million, increasing the coverage rate of the population with access to high-quality energy from 34% currently to 63% in 2024.
The prime minister’s also announced that he also sees the beginning of production of the gas exploration and liquefaction project on the Coral Sul floating platform in Area 4 in the Rovuma basin and the beginning of the projects in Area 1 of the same basin. As part of these projects two natural gas liquefaction modules are due to be installed in Afungi, in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique. Read more
