News flash

  • Mauritania has signed a a $300 million PPA agreement with Ewa Green Energy to build a hybrid power plant consisting of 160MW solar, 60MW wind and 370MWh battery storage.
  • The power plant will be built, operated, and maintained for 15 years under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, after which ownership transfers to Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC).

SOMELEC will purchase the electricity produced, helping strengthen the national grid and reduce dependence on electricity imports. The plant is scheduled to be fully operational by September 2026.

The introduction of a hybrid plant with storage will improve integration of intermittent renewable energy into the grid and strengthen supply reliability.

The announcement aligns with the “National Energy Pact” issued as part of the “Mission 300” initiative. In the pact, the government commits to providing electricity access to an additional 3.4 million Mauritanians by 2030, raising the national coverage rate from 55% to 100%. The share of renewables in the energy mix is targeted to reach 70% by that time, with total installed capacity increasing by 66%.
