Kenya: Prospect Drilling Moves to Second Baringo-Silali Geothermal Project Site

  • Kenya’s state owned Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has started exploratory drilling at the Korosi geothermal site.
  • This comes after successfully drilling three exploration wells at the first prospect, Paka.
  • The Korosi Prospect has an estimated geothermal potential of more than 600MW.

The exploratory drilling forms part of the Baringo-Silali Geothermal Project, located in Baringo County in the Rift Valley Region of Kenya. The Baringo-Silali Block has three prospect sites; namely Paka, Korosi and Silali with an estimated potential of 3,000MW.

Three exploration wells will be drilled in Korosi to ascertain the availability of the resource, before embarking on appraisal and production drilling thereafter.

The drilling initiative has been financially assisted by two grants from the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF), a sub-regional organization that finances and facilitates the development of geothermal energy in East Africa.
