Kengen Mobilises Drilling Rig for Geothermal Project in Ethiopia

  • KenGen has started the mobilisation of its drilling rig for the Tulu Moye geothermal project in Ethiopia.
  • Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) signed the US 56 million contract to provide geothermal drilling services to Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) back in December 2018. Read more
  • KenGen will be drilling a total of twelve geothermal wells, installing water supply systems and equipment as part of the contract.

Kenya is the leading producer of geothermal energy in Africa and ninth in the world, according to the Renewables Global Status 2018. The country has a geothermal installed capacity of 685 megawatts with an estimated potential of 10,000 megawatts in the Rift Valley.

Kenya is taking great pride in taking its geothermal experiences and services outside of Kenya. “Our projects in Ethiopia come at a time when KenGen’s diversification strategy has taken off in earnest. For more than 40 years now, KenGen has drilled more than 300 geothermal wells & invested in experts with considerable experience in geothermal development.”, commented Rebecca Miano, Managing Director of KenGen.

The Tulu Moye Geothermal project is Ethiopia’s first geothermal IPP project lead by French, US and Icelandic investors. The Project will be constructed in the area around the Tulu Moye volcano in Oromia. The project will be developed in two phases, phase 1- 50 MW and phase 2-100MW.
