IPP Office in South Africa announces 33 bidders in the Battery Energy Storage IPP Procurement Bid Window 3

  • South Africa’s Independent Power Producers Office (IPPO) has released the list of 33 bidders in the Battery Energy Storage Bid Window 3 under the Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) today.ย 
  • The window has faced two deadline extensions since 31 July 2024 due toย Eskom where bidders have experienced delays in securing grid-access cost estimate letters (CELโ€™s) that are required for bid qualification.ย 

The department launched a third Request for Proposal (RFP) under the Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (IPPPP), calling for the procurement of 616 MW of new generation capacity from battery energy storage technologies for five storage facilities that are located within the Free State province on 28 March 2024.

IPP bid breakdown

  • Scatec ASA, Mulilo and Infinity each bid 5 projects
  • ACWA Power, Red Rocket South Africa (Pty) Ltd and TotalEnergies submitted 4 each
  • EDF Renewables (South Africa) came in with 3 projects
  • Azura submitted 2 projects
  • Globeleq bid 1 project
