Future Energy Nigeria Offers Insights into the Booming Off-Grid, Mini-Grid Sector

  • The organisers of the Future Energy Nigeria conference and exhibition have announced the programme for the event that will take place at the Eko Hotel in Lagos from 12-13 November 2019.
  • There is a strong focus on bridging the country’s energy access gap, the role of off-grid generation projects as well as discussions on the NERC initiative to franchise the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria.

“For Nigeria, the off-grid energy market opportunity is massive” A high-level panel discussion themed “Bridging Nigeria’s energy access gap” will shine a light on the off-grid projects of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), from increasing access rates to their positive impact in the communities.

Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency in Nigeria is one of the featured panellist: “the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that mini grids could account for up to $300 billion of investment by year 2030. For Nigeria, the off-grid energy market opportunity is massive and mini grids could account to up to $10 billion annually.”

She adds: “this translates to huge economic opportunities for private sector developers and a larger vehicle for electrifying community clusters across rural and urban Nigeria. Mini grids, indeed, are the future for reaching unserved and underserved communities with safe, reliable and clean energy.”

Keynote session
The High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Abhay Thakur, is a VIP guest speaker in the opening session and will address “India’s interest in working with the Nigerian power and energy ecosystem”. The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) returns to Future Energy Nigeria as the featured country partner for the third year in a row, hosting a pavilion of almost 50 suppliers of specialized technology and services for the energy sector.

Solar off-grid and IPU training

Future Energy Nigeria’s free and very practical Knowledge Hub sessions at on the exhibition floor aim to assist power professionals and senior engineering students to become familiar with the latest technology and current trends and thereby addressing the skills gap and advancing capacity building to propel Nigeria’s power sector. The training will provide a platform to accelerate entrepreneurial spirit in off-grid solar where participants can roll up their sleeves and get stuck in the “A-Z of installing solar panels”.

The Knowledge Hub will also focus on the challenges of industrial power users, including discussions on solutions for mitigating against increased costs of electricity and intermittent power. The full programme is available here.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
