eSwatini: 10MW Lavusima Solar Plant Nears Commissioning

  • The Lavusima solar PV plant, which is near completion will guarantee a capacity of 10 MW at the point of connection.
  • With a cost of nearly USD19 million, the plant size is 13.75MW.
  • The Lavusima project is the country’s first utility-scale solar PV plant.

According to a statement released last week, the Lavumisa project has led to the creation of some 170 jobs. Future maintenance of the solar panels is anticipated to add more job openings.

The small kingdom of eSwatini is on the move to roll out more sustainable energy projects, in its quest to become less dependent on neighbours like South Africa and Mozambique to provide its energy needs.

Independent power producers (IPP’s) Globeleq and its consortium partner Sturdee Energy Southern Africa have been awarded preferred bidder status for two 15 MW solar projects in the first tranche of the Kingdom of Eswatini’s procurement programme for new generation capacity. Read more

The Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA) officially released the intention to award notice on 14 April 2021after evaluation of the bids submitted in November 2020.  The tender was originally launched in March 2020. Read more
