  • Cygnum Capital, through the AfricaGoGreen Fund’s Technical Assistance Facility, is investing in research to accelerate the electrification of South Africa’s minibus taxi industry; a sector that moves millions of people daily and underpins the country’s mobility system.

Led by flxEV, this feasibility study explores both the opportunities and challenges of transitioning minibus taxis to electric vehicles. With over 150,000 vehicles in operation nationwide, and annual revenues exceeding ZAR 90 billion, a shift to electric mobility could deliver significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, improve urban air quality and advance South Africa’s just energy transition.

At a recent C40 Cities event on e-mobility in South African cities, the first pilot vehicle was showcased to stakeholders. This milestone demonstrates not only the technical feasibility of electric minibus taxis, but also the critical role of collaboration between financiers, innovators, and policymakers in unlocking scalable solutions.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
