Botswana Announces RFQ for 12 Solar PV Projects

Botswana’s stated-owned power utility Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) relating to the development, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of a 12 solar photovoltaic power projects. No further technical or financial details are provided.

The local press reports that according to CEO of BPC Stefan Schwarzfischer, the tender will seek to identify qualified Independent Power Producers on behalf of its parent ministry and Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA). The new Solar Pv projects are intended to provide more electricity connections in Botswana to cover the whole country within the next few years.

Interested IPPs will have until March 29, 2019, to submit their project proposals. No doubt more information will be announced in the interim.

According to the USAID’S Power Africa Fact Sheet, Botswana currently generates the bulk of its power from coal. The country has significant solar potential, with 3,200 hours of sunshine per year,  and irradiance of 6640 Wh/m2/day.  Only a portion (450 MW) of installed capacity is available to produce power, and additional demand is met through electricity imports, primarily from South Africa via the Southern African Power Pool.
