- CEO of packaging group Nampak, Andre de Ruyter, has been appointed the new CEO of Eskom.
- Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Pravin Gordhan, made the announcement today.
- De Ruyter is expected to commence his duties on 15 January 2020.
The Department of Public Enterprises said the appointment of De Ruyter was in line with Eskom’s recruitment policies. Gordhan thanked De Ruyter for availing himself for the position and agreeing to take a pay cut from his current position at Nampak.
“I would like to thank Mr. De Ruyter for not only accepting this position at a difficult time for Eskom but, given Eskom’s current financial situation, also agreeing to a lower compensation package than the position currently pays,” the department said in a statement.
In addition to his role at Nampak, De Ruyter spent more than two decades at petrochemical giant Sasol Ltd. in a number of senior management roles. He’s overseen work in the US, Germany, China and African nations including Nigeria and Angola, the department said.
De Ruyter will work with the Eskom board, management, and the government to spearhead the re-organisation of the struggling power utility into three entities: generation, transmission, and distribution under Eskom Holdings.
The move brings assurance and certainty to the leadership of Eskom which is in debt to the tune of R450 billion. The state-owned power company has been looking for a new CEO since Phakamani Hadebe resigned in July citing poor health.

Surely the R450million debt is a mistake. Should it not be R450 000 million?
