200 MW Coal Fired Plant to be constructed in Mozambique

  • According to local newspaper O País, Somagec Mozambique, a subsidiary of the China Energy Engineering Corporation group will commence construction of a coal fired power plant in Nacala-a-Velha district in Nampula province.
  • The construction works are set to be completed by 2022 and will cost an estimated cost USD 355 million.

The 200MW plant will be supplied with coal extracted by Vale Moçambique, a subsidiary of Brazilian group Vale, in Moatize, Tete province.

The Environmental Pre-Feasibility and Scoping Study, conducted by Impacto, the consultant hired to survey the project’s possible impacts on the Nacala-a-Velha district, states that it is feasible.

O País also reported that this venture will supply the energy deficit in that area of the country, as the city of Nampula only has access to 42 MW, far short of its needs, which in 2023 will be 115 MW, according to the country’s Energy Master Plan.
